課程概述 |
The Iliad and the Odyssey occupy a rather ambiguous place in the history of Greek, and European, literature. On the one hand, they are at the very beginning of the written poetic tradition. On the other hand, they also represent the culmination of a lengthy tradition of orally-transmitted verse. Thus Homeric poetry constitutes something of a paradox: on the one hand, direct, traditional, and seemingly unselfconscious; on the other hand, complex in intertextual associations, sophisticated in organization and deployment of artistic devices. Not just historical curiosity, but also high art deserving of our most serious attention. In this course we will explore this dual standing through a close reading of six books from each of the epics (in Lattimore's translations), highlighting the special characteristics of orally composed and transmitted poetry, as well as its social functions. |
課程目標 |
It is expected that the course will help students:
(a) to understand the content, form, scope and structure of Homeric poetry;
(b) to approach epic poetry as a narrative genre, and to discern how it differs from other genres;
(c) to see epic poetry as a way of encapsulating historical and cultural concerns in pre-literary societies.
Additionally, students will acquire and/or practice the following skills:
(a) to regard verse works critically; i.e., to evaluate and analyze them with sensitivity and precision;
(b) to communicate critical thinking in oral presentations and written essays;
(c) to plan, execute, and complete a long-term project;
(d) to consult reference works accurately and judiciously;
(e) to engage in and to facilitate group discussions and activities. |
課程要求 |
Students are required to participate actively in class discussions, make oral presentations, and produce a term paper. |
